June is when summer breaks open. Italian beaches reach full warmth, Greek islands hit their first peak, southern France warms by mid-month, and Turkey's southwestern coast becomes one of the best value beach destinations in Europe. The Adriatic is swimmable everywhere. Spain's Balearics are at their golden moment between cold spring and the August inferno. The light, especially around solstice, is the longest of the year.

- Greek meltemi winds usually start late June. Plan island hops earlier in the month if you want calm crossings.
- Italian beach club umbrellas in Puglia and Sardinia book out by June 1 for July weekends. June itself is open.
- Turkey's south coast is hot inland and breezy on the water. Stay close to the coast.
- Croatia's Vis is small. Book accommodation before arriving.
Where to stay
Puglia masserie around Ostuni and Carovigno are open and at shoulder rates. Sardinian agriturismi inland from Costa Rei beat any coastal resort for character. Greek studios on Milos and Naxos around Plaka and Mikri Vigla are at value rates. Turkey's pansiyon scene around Kas is family-run and walkable. Croatian apartments on Vis in Komiza or Vis Town are tiny and lovely.
Final word
June is the month to use a rental car and chase coves. Everything is open, nothing is overwhelmed yet, and the days stretch past 9 in the evening.
